We had a great time at Snug Underground! Many thanks to Gena and the Snug Underground Festival for hosting us at the only venue we’ve ever performed at that has a giant preying mantis in the backyard.
Gena, Steve, Ezra and Gayle are proud to be High Maintenance! Read the rest of this entry »

It’s really hard to feel upset about the senate race today because THIS IS RACHEL MADDOW HOLDING A FEMME SHOW T-SHIRT.

I have to thank Rachel Kahn and my femme pal Theadora for egging me on here. I got all nervous and shy. Mr. GF says he has never seen my shy side before.
We explained what it was and she was so sweet and gracious. She asked, “Is it a femmey style t-shirt?” “No, we have different styles and we got you the butch one.” Ms. Maddow replied “that’s very perceptive of you.” She seemed happy to hear from queer fans and she was nice enough to tuck the shirt under her “butchy” blazer for the picture “so it looks like I’m wearing it.”
soon I will get off the couch and get on with my life and think about how the political situation in this country just got much much worse overnight, but let me just enjoy this moment, ok?

Today is the Femme Show’s turn for the Virtual Book Tour for Visible: A Femmethology, the two-volume anthology about femme out now from Homofactus Press. All our blogger friends are weighing in throughout April, and it’s so much fun I think we can go on a virtual tour. Not sure how that works for performance artists, though. Maybe I can ask folks to post our youtube videos all over the place? So much easier than actual touring!
This anthology is almost daunting in its breadth and depth. At it’s best, it feels like the best kitchen table discussion ever – femmes and friends with days and days worth of stories to share, opening their lives and letting you in. There’s hot coffee and hard liquor and lemonade and you can stay all night. My favorite essays are personal reflections that are well-written enough to pull you into their world. The Femme Show is represented by Sassafras and by Peggy Munson, who was in our first ever show. There are some new favorites and (JD Dykes and J.C. Yu) and old ones (Hadassah Hill, Leah Lakshimi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Tara Hardy) among the 50+ contributors. This is definitely a wonderful way to expand the conversation about femme.

I love writing letters. Those who know me well know that I’m a complete email junkie, and that it’s unusual for me to go more than a couple of hours without checking my email but I’m also really into the art of physical letter writing (and refuse to admit that it’s a dying art). I’m not always the best about keeping up with my physical correspondence but it’s something that I at the very least like to make an effort to do.
There is just something incredibly romantic (clearly this is the vintage loving femme in me) about sitting down and just taking the time to clear my mind of all the million things that I need to be doing and just write a lovely letter to a femme friend/pen pal. Read the rest of this entry »

I love Craigslist. It has brought me good, long-lasting jobs, strange one-time jobs, my cute blue bike, roommates, and dates. It also provides hours of entertainment, and by entertainment I mean reasons to roll my eyes, vent, and scream. Right now in the Boston women-for-women section you can find totally serious, well-thought out personal ads written by well-adjusted people who are capable of saying what they want but are not discriminatory a-holes. You can also find pretty girls looking for a “first time,” men pretending to be pretty girls looking for a “first time,” the above-mentioned discriminatory a-holes, the word “femme” used to mean “straight-looking,” and a discussion of whether or not Rachel Maddow is butch. Last week we talked about ankle strap high heels. In the category of “making heels walkable” I highly recommend these. It’s not a regular padded insole, it shifts your weight back onto your heels.
They are made by Insolia and are about $10 at CVS, or you can get a 3-pack for $20 here. I have them in the shoes I wear for No Femmes Allowed and SPPSSM, and they made it possible for me to go from pointe shoes to heels and back during all those shows last year!

The sexy, sweet straps not only make my legs look longer and (hopefully) inspire thoughts of ankle restraints, they also make walking so much easier!
In the midst of an awful week last week, I stopped at Payless for the only kind of “retail therapy” I can afford. I tried on an awesome grey pump with a big bow on the heel, but wobbled instantly. I realized that I can’t handle heels without an ankle strap. I love the aesthetic of straps that wrap around the ankle, and for a sweet casual look I like the character-shoe inspired look.
