Tell-All Tuesdays: Katie Diamond
Katie designed our world-famous logo and has done several of our posters, including the last two Boston shows. Read on to learn more about one of the awesome people who rocks the Femme Show from behind the scenes.
Tell us about your first Femme Show
My first Femme Show, I was attending as an art vendor. I had a bundle of feminist bike shirts, and a bunch of queer comics about safe sex. What captured me immediately was how much of a community we were—even though I was a complete stranger to the cast and crew! I helped out with sound needs, set up chairs, helped other vendors get settled. It was great and totally intoxicating.
What have you been up to since October?
Well… I quit my non-profit job so I could completely and utterly focus on my graphic design and illustration, got a part-time job doing all the communications for a local cafe. It’s been a little slow but is slowly becoming more consistent…and lucrative! And I’ve gone back to running Dr. Sketchy’s Portland full-time, too.
Why do you think the Femme Show is important?
I feel really strongly that the only real way to make social change is through art and performance… It just has more of an impact because it’s not a lecture or a book or a news program… It stays with people for longer, and tugs at their brains and heart-strings harder. So, of course, the Femme Show falls perfectly into that dogma.
What are you most excited about for the Femme Show in 2010?
All the new Portlanders getting involved! We’ve finally got enough community credibility to really get people involved, and I love it!
What is your favorite thing to do onstage? Least favorite?
Well, I press the buttons and make things happen OFF-stage mostly… But I guess my favorite thing to do on stage is impersonate Amy Adams. And my least favorite thing to do is wear a skirt. Which makes my favorite thing to do really conflicting. (ed. note: I really wish you and Amy would let me post those pictures, it was the best thing ever!)
Sweet or savory?
Savory savory savory times a million…and then a touch of sweet.
