Mr. GF and I spent the weekend in New York City, hanging (and hooping) with Bitches with Barrettes, taking ballet class (well, I took ballet class) and seeing the gay sights. I walked out of ballet class into the bright 1 PM sunlight and announced that I needed to buy sunglasses ASAP. Most of my sunglasses come from street vendors because I always lose them eventually and refuse to pay more than $12. The first vendor I saw had these for five dollars:

They have polka dots! wow!
We went to the Lesbian Herstory archives and read the Amazon Times, which taught us about the “insidious” nature of butch-femme relationships, which are ruining lesbian feminist community. For real.

I have a confession to make; I like it when my door is opened for me. I suppose I should add a disclaimer to this which is that I only like it when my door is opened for me when it’s being done by my butch partner, or another chivalrous butch who I happen to be in the company with at the present moment. Any straight dudes who might have happened across this blog, and could potentially recognize me – don’t open my door. That said, there are few things that instantly make me squishy as when my partner seemingly effortlessly maneuvers hirself to open the door for me. That said, there are times where I am unchaperoned and must manage to deal with doors on my own. My clear inability to do this came to a head this weekend when I was visiting my friend Leslie in Vermont for some “Visible: A Femmethology” release gigs. Read the rest of this entry »

Today is the Femme Show’s turn for the Virtual Book Tour for Visible: A Femmethology, the two-volume anthology about femme out now from Homofactus Press. All our blogger friends are weighing in throughout April, and it’s so much fun I think we can go on a virtual tour. Not sure how that works for performance artists, though. Maybe I can ask folks to post our youtube videos all over the place? So much easier than actual touring!
This anthology is almost daunting in its breadth and depth. At it’s best, it feels like the best kitchen table discussion ever – femmes and friends with days and days worth of stories to share, opening their lives and letting you in. There’s hot coffee and hard liquor and lemonade and you can stay all night. My favorite essays are personal reflections that are well-written enough to pull you into their world. The Femme Show is represented by Sassafras and by Peggy Munson, who was in our first ever show. There are some new favorites and (JD Dykes and J.C. Yu) and old ones (Hadassah Hill, Leah Lakshimi Piepzna-Samarasinha, Tara Hardy) among the 50+ contributors. This is definitely a wonderful way to expand the conversation about femme.

Sure, they may have had a bad day, maybe they’d been harassed dozens of times that day already. But for the love of femmes, people, don’t be these lesbians.*
Today, I saw a lesbian couple walking through the mall. One of the ladies walked up to me in the middle of the busy mall and started screaming at me about how rude it is to stare, and how we are all equal- straight or not. I was only staring because I’m a lesbian too, and they were hot. FML
*or queers, gays, dykes, etc.

We had a great time last night with Adelaide, A Stick and a Stone, and AJ at the Midway. Alicia, Johnny and Elizabeth performed and I was the femme roadie.
Johnny, Alicia and I, along with much of the audience, were all at the state house earlier in the day asking legislators to support the trans rights bill, so it was a long day. It was a small but loving crowd. It felt like a house concert full of friends on a winter night with apple cider and cinnamon buns, which was just what we needed at the end of a stressful tuesday.
If you have a chance to see the Wood to Stone to Sea folks, I highly recommend it. The rest of their tour dates are here.
