Femme Favorites: Letter Writing
I love writing letters. Those who know me well know that I’m a complete email junkie, and that it’s unusual for me to go more than a couple of hours without checking my email but I’m also really into the art of physical letter writing (and refuse to admit that it’s a dying art). I’m not always the best about keeping up with my physical correspondence but it’s something that I at the very least like to make an effort to do.
There is just something incredibly romantic (clearly this is the vintage loving femme in me) about sitting down and just taking the time to clear my mind of all the million things that I need to be doing and just write a lovely letter to a femme friend/pen pal.
Really, when it comes down to it writing letters is nearly as much fun as getting mail but I’d be telling a major lie if I said that I didn’t enjoy coming home from a long day at work and finding a sweet little letter waiting for me in the mailbox. Some special recent letters have been a beautiful crafted cupcake valentine including hand stamped vinyl from a femme friend in Vancouver BC, and a postcard all the way from Japan from a femme friend in Australia who was vacationing there! Sending and receiving letters is a really important part of helping me to feel connected to my community who in many cases I live very far away from and in the instances of both the above femmes I have never met in person, but nonetheless feel a close femme kinship with.
I really enjoy embellishing letters with stamps, and stickers and find the entire process of written correspondence to be incredibly femme, I think that for me It’s about the flamboyance and executrices of the activity which has in general fallen so out of fashion in modern society. One of my most treasured mail embellishments—a wax seal was a Christmas gift from my partner. With the aid of a lighter I can now leave a beautiful scrolled “S” in pink wax on letters!!! I even felt the need to use it when returning the copies of my author contracts for the pieces that appear in the anthologies “Visible: A Femmethology” which incidentally is now available for sale on Amazon or directly from the website! www.femmethology.com
For me letter writing is an opportunity to sink into my femmeness, to get dressed up and put on my pink rhinestone reading glasses and just start writing. It’s a chance for me to also take a few moments and connect with my femme community no matter how far apart we are. Speaking of, I think it might be time to get off the computer because I know several femme friends I owe letters to!
Are you a letter writer, if so does the act have femme connections for you?
