Making a care package for my butch roommate who’s about to go on a mini-tour. It is feeling gendered, which was not my intention: emergency, lint roller, homemade sewing kit, safety pins, stain remover. I raided the femme show kit and my makeup box for ideas, but decided against including clear nail polish, eyelash glue, or toupee tape.

I love writing letters. Those who know me well know that I’m a complete email junkie, and that it’s unusual for me to go more than a couple of hours without checking my email but I’m also really into the art of physical letter writing (and refuse to admit that it’s a dying art). I’m not always the best about keeping up with my physical correspondence but it’s something that I at the very least like to make an effort to do.
There is just something incredibly romantic (clearly this is the vintage loving femme in me) about sitting down and just taking the time to clear my mind of all the million things that I need to be doing and just write a lovely letter to a femme friend/pen pal. Read the rest of this entry »

So many of us, femme and otherwise, grew up with ballerina dreams. For people who danced seriously, devoting massive portions of our adolescence to training and performing, the need to dance never really leaves us. Some dancers leave it behind completely, others turn to burlesque (hello, slutcracker), ballroom, or yoga, disciplines that call on our training but are less taxing on our bodies, less all-consuming. For professionals who are retiring (in their 20s, 30s or 40s), moving on but staying connected to the dance world might also means taking charge in ways they never considered in the top-down world of ballet. This video from NYTimes about Columbia Ballet Collaborative makes me think about ballerina dreams and how they impact the women who grew up dreaming them. Read the rest of this entry »

How do a motley crew of femmes and friends entertain themselves while waiting for their lunch? After two weekends in a a row of long car rides and plenty of talk about our three favorite subjects (gender, art and gossip), we were all out of talk, so we played the fax machine game.

The One National Archives is hosting a photo exhibit called “GenderPlay in Lesbian Culture” and it features a photo of your favorite femme performance artists from 2008, by the wonderful Steph Plourde-Simard, who always makes us look fabulous. I don’t know how many folks reading this are anywhere near LA, but if you are go check it out and tell them the femme show sent you!
Discover cross-dressers and tobacco-chewers of the American Civil War and the Wild West, stone butches, high femmes, and kikis of the 1950s, through to the dykes of the Lesbian Feminist 1970s to bois, trans people, and genderqueers today. All re-mixed with vintage photos, archival docs, film clips, and historic first person accounts.
Produced by ONE Archives Gallery & Museum and LEX – the Lesbian Exploratorium. Co-sponsored by the City of West Hollywood & LA Pride/Christopher Street West.

True Colors is the country’s largest LGBTQI youth and allies conference. It’s held in a dairy barn at the University of Connecticut in Storrs. Not really, it’s on the lovely campus. I was on the verge of collapse the whole time thanks to an awful cold, so I don’t really remember much but I took some pictures. We had great audiences on Friday and Saturday, and loved getting to connect to youth and their stories.

Phyllis and Beatrice show their pride, and offer helpful advice on how to tell if your GSA advisor is a ‘mo. Read the rest of this entry »
