The GF and I are lying in bed at my parent’s house. Who knew that air mattresses are more comfortable with two people? You don’t get that awful sinking and sliding. It’s Christmas morning and I’m listening to the silence down the hall (sisters are sleeping) and the rustling downstairs (parents are playing Santa). She’s been reading Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers and dreaming about 1950′s bars. We start talking about the book. We’re joking about sexual inverts. She’s the invert, I’m just her partner. It’s funny to joke about, I say, but also kind of awful. If you’re an invert and I’m your partner it means I’m neurotic and untrustworthy and should really be with a man.
I really think those women, most of them anyways, chose their life. They must have felt “different” in childhood too. They must have sought out the queer community, or chosen to stay once they stumbled upon it. Loving people like you, I say, is so much a part of who I am. It must have been the same for those women.
I think we forget, I say, that those femmes must have been brave. That they made a choice. That for all they could pass, they gave up a lot to be with the people they loved, to be who they were.
I prattle on and on, like I do, staring at the ceiling. I turn towards her. “I don’t think we forget that,” she says. “I don’t forget that.”
“I love you,” I say. It’s all I can think to say.

One of our friends in Portland, ME passed this on. Looks pretty cool!
This is a list of essay topics compiled by me and some other folx to be included in a zine on Femme Identity. We hope to have all submissions in by January 2nd (w/a bit of flexibility if needed). Feel free to intersect any of these topics into your submission, or if you feel inspired, invent a new topic and write about that! This zine is meant to be a critical analysis of heteronormativity, white supremacy, capitalism, patriarchy, and all other systems of oppression that intersect with the experience(s) of identifying as Femme. I know the Boston show was months ago now, but this weekend I popped in the DVD and was reminded about just how incredible the experience was. I’ve previously mentioned in blogs that participating in The Femme Show was really important to me, and involved me really moving outside of my comfort zone in a lot of ways. Prior to the femme show I’d had wonderful femme friends, but I’d never done any sort of collaborative art with other femmes. For the most part, interactions that I’d had with large groups of femme identified folks had been filled with competitiveness and cattiness. I was terrified this would be my experience with The Femme Show.
I really want to challenge myself, and other femmes to continue putting ourselves out there in ways that maybe make us nervous, or uncomfortable, and to try to combat the culture of competitiveness that I’ve seen fostered in so many femme communities. Just last week I was having a conversation via email with a wonderful new femme friend about our experiences of alienation within femme community that we have previously been involved in. We were talking about our frustration with these interactions and how we have faith that the femme community could be so much more.
Watching the Femme Show on Thursday night belly full with homemade un-turkey and all the fixings I was ruminating on how many things I have to be thankful for, and how without a doubt the experience of The Femme Show is one of them.
