Ok, so maybe I’ve been living under some sort of rock, but this is the first I’ve ever heard of Sappho cosmetics- a new makeup brand that’s targeting to the L word crowd (I will resist delving into my *huge* issues with the L word and the ways in which it reinscribes heteronormative femininity and how folks have continually referenced characters as being femmes….).
I mean just for the name it might score some points with The Femme Show’s own Beatrice Llewellyn and Phillis Troubridge of SPPSSM ; ) but I haven’t made up my mind what I think about it. I think that maybe my main issue with them is about how they were described on AfterEllen where the ‘lipstick lesbian’ lines were flowing freely. I’m biased, and I’m pretty sure I’ve referenced it here before, but I HATE the term lipstick lesbian so I guess that didn’t immediately make me fall in love with the product. I’ll admit that their mission of “making up fearlessly” and “learning how to make up and being as daring as you please” is enticing, though I doubt it will be pulling any business away from my drugstore cheap makeup anytime soon, after all I don’t see them with the colors and intensity that I demand from my cosmetics….

The social-conservatives have raised millions of dollars more than us and we need to close the fundraising gap in order to win! This is not just about California– if same-sex marriage is banned out there it will be a major set back for ALL of queer rights.
COME DRINK AND DANCE WITH YOUR FELLOW EQUALITY LOVERS!!!!
100% of donations go directly from you to the No On 8 campaign.

I’ve been meaning to write about my experiences in Boston all week, but have been unable to really find the words to describe how incredible the experience was. I’d never been to Boston before, and feel so blessed that I got to experience the huge outpouring of support for femmes, and femme community that the audience brought. They were incredible, thoughtful, folks who I feel like actually * got * what we were trying to share with them. Living in New York, I’ll admit I was a little nervous about being part of the show as I had only been able to participate in rehearsals via a DVD I sent of myself, but my worries were for nothing! Everyone was absolutely incredibly warm and welcoming and I felt right at home from the moment that Rachel picked me up at the bus station! I left Boston at the end of the weekend feeling like I could honestly call everyone in the show a friend. Also, a huge thank you to Havalah for letting me stay on her wonderfully comfortable futon, where I enjoyed loads of wifi and not really moving until we walked for an incredible brunch at 2:30 on Saturday afternoon!

Wow, that was amazing. There’s nothing like performing to a packed house that is there to see you, full of people who know who you are and what you’re about.

I am still recovering, taking time to finally fold my laundry and wash the kitchen floor and read the newspaper and go walking in the cemetery with Mr. Girlfriend. But I wish I’d written this post sooner, I think I missed a chance to capture some of that incredible feeling.

It's not easy jumping in a cape!
We are so excited!
Traniwreck was super fun. We’ve got two more previews this week, then on to the big shows!
Yesterday afternoon I got a text message from my girlfriend: “I thought there was a caterpillar on my floor but it was just your fake eyelashes.” Damn she puts up with a lot.

Ms. Hinterland's doll she made of herself
Bellow is the call for participation in a truly incredible community art project being organized by Ms. Hinterland a lovely, lovely femme I’ve had the pleasure of corresponding with over the past couple of weeks. She’s making hand embroidered dolls that will be accompanied by a paragraph that explores female identity. She hopes to be displaying them at the femme conference in 2010 : )
Before submitting I asked her about how she planned to deal with tattoos and she quickly got back to me saying that she was thrilled with the prospect of embroidering them as well! I’ve since sent her my paragraph and photos of my tattoos that are visible from the front because of their importance in how I understand my own gender. I can’t wait to see my doll!!!! I thought some of you might also be into this project : )
xoxo
