A few weeks ago I got to see my friend Mr. Kate at the Women Action and the Media Conference and we got to talking about gender (surprise, surprise). Mr. Kate and I went to college together, where we first met because I was wearing a t-shirt that said “feminist” in glitter bubble letters. Since we are sadly 4 hours apart by Chinatown bus, we’re continuing the conversation over email and sharing it with you here.
Maggie to Mr. Kate
I think that while our identities are different in many ways it feels really great and important to talk about what we do have in common, which is really having a strong emotional relationship to gender and feeling that it’s really central.
Sometimes I wonder if everyone feels this way beneath the surface, but we’re not talking about this stuff enough, or if other people just aren’t as shar-y as I am. (being an artist means sharing the hard stuff, i guess). Read the rest of this entry »

Femme Mystique, Leslea Newman
I think I read this in college, but I need to read it again since I don’t remember any of it.
The Last Generation: Prose and Poetry, CherrÃe Moraga
The Still Persistent Desire, ed Joan Nestle
I’m currently reading this from start to finish, as I realized recently that I skipped around the first time.
Forty-Three Septembers, Jewelle Gomez
I just remembered her amazing vampire novel, The Gilda Stories, and realized I should look for more of her work. If you haven’t read The Gilda Stories, go read it now! Even if you don’t like vampires, you’ll love it.

More Femme-Relevant Books and Authors!
This is going to be in installments, even though Sassafrass covered a huge portion of the femme canon I have a lot to say. Here are some books I love. Coming soon: the books on my reading list, and a list of favorite pieces from anthologies.
Whipping Girl, Julia Serano
Hey girls, did you hear the news? It’s been scientifically proven that barrettes are dangerous! So are bracelets and bric-a-brac. It’s a fact. And don’t be fooled by the thick-necked macho men who pretend that “girl stuff†is boring or frivolous…

Books have always played a HUGE role in my life, so it should come as no surprise that when I began coming out as femme turned to books. Since that time there have been a number of books and authors whose words have nourished my soul sharing with me their strength, and stories as femmes. For my blog this week I decided that I would highlight my top ten favorite femme books, and five of my favorite femme authors. These were both difficult lists to make simply because there were so many people and so many books that I could have included, finally I just had to go to the bookshelves in my living room and make some decisions.
Favorite Femme Authors:
1. Minnie Bruce Pratt
2. Dorothy Allison
3. Joan Nestle
4. Anna Camilleri
5. Leslea Newman

A few weeks ago I was walking to the bus to go to work. As I crossed the street, dodging between and around cars, I happened to notice a bumper sticker that simply read: Save the Boobies. I kept walking, but when the phrase actually processed, I spun around to see if that’s what I’d really read! It was: Save the Boobies. I grinned – what an amazing twist on an old idea.
