Put your Breast Foot Forward to Save the Boobies!!
A few weeks ago I was walking to the bus to go to work. As I crossed the street, dodging between and around cars, I happened to notice a bumper sticker that simply read: Save the Boobies. I kept walking, but when the phrase actually processed, I spun around to see if that’s what I’d really read! It was: Save the Boobies. I grinned - what an amazing twist on an old idea.
This goofy little phrase about a very serious topic got me thinking about boobs - you know, more so than usual. I mean, let’s face it, whether you like having them or you admire them on others, everyone loves breasts! In the weeks that followed, I noticed articles about communities protesting public breast feeding and about that woman who was asked by TSA Security Officers to remove her nipple rings with pliers before boarding her flight. What is wrong with society? If we spent half as much of our time looking for a cure as we did complaining about breast feeding and nipple rings, maybe we would have a one by now!
Three million women are living with breast cancer - and one third doesn’t even know it! Breast cancer kills approximately one woman every 14 minutes. No one knows what causes breast cancer or how it can be prevented and there is no known cure. Well, I don’t like the words no or can’t, so I don’t accept that there’s nothing that can be done. I’ve considered doing this for the past few years, but this year, NO MORE EXCUSES!
With the help of a couple friends, I formed a team, Breast Foot Forward, and together we’ve joined thousands of others to walk 39.3 miles in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Big companies organizing fundraising events are always iffy, but Avon appears to spend their money well and I feel confident that the money our team raises (well 79.5% of it) will go directly to “saving boobies” within the greater Boston area.
So why am I writing this post? Well, because I need your help. Not just in donations, although those are awesome too! (You can visit our team page by clicking here. Please donate to the walker with the least amount raised because each walker needs to raise a minimum of $1800 in order to participate in the walk.) But because while one person walking a distance roughly equal to 1.5 marathons for a cure is great, it’s even better when more do it together! The camaraderie, support, and crazy fun & antics you get up to when you do something like this as a group is one of the things that really finalized my decision to do it in the first place. So, if you’ve been touched by this horrible epidemic, or even if you haven’t, and want to join old friends, or come make new friends, then consider joining Breast Foot Forward on May 17 - 18 at the Boston Avon Breast Cancer Walk. Come walk, talk, share a pretty incredible experience with a bunch of amazing people and raise funds and awareness as we try to make breast cancer history!
