crafty femme

This past weekend was absolutely glorious here in NYC, blue skies, sunshine, and temperatures in the mid-fifties (did I mention that I hate to be hot) even new yorkers couldn’t help but smile as we all squinted at that unfamiliar ball of golden light. Every Saturday morning Kestryl and I go grocery shopping, we carry our big canvas bags and fill up on enough vegetarian organic goodness to last us the entire week. Well this past weekend when we got home it just so happened that we also needed to go out to pick up dog and cat food. Because of the nice weather we decided to take the bus, and on the way back to the apartment noticed a craft store that we had never seen before, so of course after unloading the food for the furry kids at home we headed back out!
OMG entering that craft store I was in femme heaven!!!! i was seriously surrounded by beautiful fabric (and oh so very cheap) and i wont even mention the trim!!! oh good goddess it was actually 10 yards for $1 ! Needless to say we left the shop with several yards of beautiful pink fabric and proceeded to spend the evening sewing me a beautiful pink skirt that can be worn over either of my tutus!!!!! we also picked up several different colors of yarn and Kestryl has begun very patiently teaching me how to crochet. I’m still very clearly in the learning phase of things, but I’m already starting to pick it up.
Growing up I never really learned how to sew, so it’s a skill that i’m just starting to build as an adult, and maybe it’s connected to that but for whatever reason for me crafting feels tied to my femme identity (not all crafting mind you- as i’m learning to sew and crochet from my partner who is very firmly a butch). perhaps it’s just that i’m excited about all the new accessories—i fully intend to crochet all summer and by next winter have a new collection of scarves, leg warmers, arm warmers, and possibly even a crocheted skirt!!!! there is something about crafting that just feels glittery and magical to me, like how at the beginning of the afternoon we can start with a little folded square of fabric and a few hours later i can be twirling around the living room in a new custom fit to me skirt. what about all the rest of you femmes, are you into crafts?
